BET Hip Hop Awards Were Last Night...And I Was EXTREMELY Disappointed

The BET Hip Hop awards have been a perennial event where BET puts lyricists on point. A good focus of their awards is to award individuals who have an unreal lyrical stamina...Sway would call them Hyenas. Historically, the limelight is put on the BET Cyphers which have become legendary from when Joe Budden murdered the cypher with a rookie by the name Nicki Minaj, to Black Hippy and Shady dropping some of those most memorable lines in rap history. The squad cyphers for G.O.O.D. music, A$AP Mob and others have just reiterated the fact that Hip Hop ain't dead. So you can imagine that last night would be no different...right?

Wrong.

Now I'm not hating or being salty about the new age of swag rap (i.e. mumble rap) with the focus being on guys like Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage and others, but when you step to a cypher mic I best hope you're rapping off the top of the dome. If you plan on using written raps, make sure they are actually legit. The art of freestyling is integral to hip hop, regardless of the style of rap you choose to love. One of the highlights for me was when Lil Wayne and Chocolate Droppa (aka Kevin Hart) actually freestyled. If you're on the same award ceremony doing BET cyphers against a 5 ft nothing comedian then PLEASE show up and do something. I was actually upset with the State Property cypher. Excited to see all those cats in the same room killing the mic but they were just reciting the same bars from their Game of Thrones track on Neef's most recent project.

Now there were some serious highlights. Token murdered his bars. Probably the best of the night. The State Property cypher was still enjoyable but it left a bad taste in my mouth. The live cyphers were heat. Dead Prez and Locksmith...goddamn. The spoken word performances by Big K.R.I.T. and Lecrae were phenomena, filled with the upmost emotion and definitely the highlights of the night. You can tell there was a political statement being made the entire night. Links to the cyphers and performances that I believe are worth your time are down below. (I would have put them on the page itself but the video player for BET could possibly be the worst video player on the internet).
