Most Underrated Albums of 2016...In My Opinion But My Opinion Be Fire B...

As we approach the end of 2016 (Good Riddance) and reach the new year, it has grown custom to look back at the year and discuss some of the highs and lows of society. Whether it's the best of sports highlights or remembering those who have passed on in the year, you will not get away from a list summarizing the highlights of 2016. I typically don't write these types of things because I don't listen to every project released but this year there were a ton of underrated projects that were dropped that never really gained any sort of notoriety. In fact, there are a couple of projects in here that I would not have even listened to if it wasn't for my homeys letting me know. With that being said, if you think certain projects deserve some attention and I did not comment on it, let me know in the comment section below. There were a few projects that I definitely liked that didn't make this list (Spark Master Tape - Silhouette of a Sunken City, Classified - Greatful and Danny Brown - Pneumonia to list a few), but the projects listed below, in my opinion, deserve everyone's attention.

Here are my underrated projects of 2016.

RIP My Laptop...June 2010 - November 2016.

I am sorry to regret that my laptop has officially died on me. While I somehow got it to work briefly to make this post and transfer all my files over to my cloud account, this computer is literally on it's last legs. For example...the audio card...dead. Explorer.exe...doesn't work. I had 16 GB of RAM in this laptop. It's working on 8 GB only. So there are some serious tings wrong. So enjoy the visuals for now as I wait for my new super badass laptop to come through next week...

But check out the new visuals from A Tribe Called Quest and the INCREDIBLE Classroom Instruments version of Metallica with The Roots and Jimmy Fallon.

Shia > All You Wack Rappers

Visuals. BUT OMG. Shia Labeouf aka Louis Stevens aka Sam Witwicky is a better MC then maybe 50% of what's out there in hip hop...

However, there are some very insane visuals in this post. Some dope tracks from John Legend, Alicia Keys and others as well. Enjoy.

Wayback Playback - UGK - Int'l Players Anthem (Video) ft. Outkast

I am pretty sure I've posted this song before but man this is probably one of the most legendary collaborations ever in hip hop history. First of all, UGK 4 Life. It's a dream of mine to head down to Houston, Texas and just meet Bun B at a BBQ joint and kick it. That's a literal dream of mine. But then to get Outkast in there...Yes LAAAWD.

But then today it's making internet news that this song may not have turned the way it did if it was up to Pimp C. It turns out that Pimp C hated the fact that Andre 3000 took the drums off of the beat during his acapella. The Pimp (RIP) was actually going to call up 3 Stacks and tell him to do it again with the drums. As reported in an interview with ItsTheReal, Jeff Sledge (former A&R of Jive Records) said,
"When Andre sent his piece back and had no drums, Chad was pissed off...He was going off About Andre taking the drums out."
Jeff then said that he has to convince Pimp C in keeping as is in order to emphasize Pimp's 16 as the beat drops. A very similar story was told about Pimp C and Big Pimpin. Bun B reported that the Pimp actually hated the song and didn't want to be in the video...Imagine if these songs didn't happen the way they did?

While You're Out Trick or Treating, Enjoy Some of These Insane Visuals!

2 of my favorite songs of 2016 dropped brand new visuals today. Cudi and Anderson.Paak killed it homey. I really enjoy Cudi's joint Surfin based on the context of riding on his own wave when it comes to the industry. But there are some solid joints from Yelawolf, Jeezy, Locksmith and more.

Meek Mill Drops DC4 and Everyone Became a Meek Mill Fan Overnight...With Additional Mixtapes from A$AP Mob and Curren$y (Updated)

Everyone was dick riding Drake during the whole beef ting. While Back 2 Back was hot, it made everyone kind of forget who Meek Mill was. Meek Mill took the supposed L, and moved on and dropped a hot mixtape. But that's not the only amazing project that dropped last night. 2 Chainz, Jeezy, KXNG Crooked and more. Enjoy the projects but remember to support your favorite artists.

Should Drake Just Give it a Rest?

Aubrey Graham is celebrating his 30th birthday and for him it's a good time to be alive. Hate him or love him, he is arguably one of the most scintillating artists in the music industry today. Breaking all kinds of records and making himself a permanent face for pop culture. Dude starts trends over 40's production. With his most recent OVO Sound radio show, Drake dropped 4 tracks with his one track, "Two Birds, One Stone," making headlines with his subtle disses towards Pusha T and Kid Cudi.

For those who are unaware, Drake has constantly been referenced in a negative manner in Pusha T's music with Drake staying quiet for many years. Kid Cudi also went on a recent tirade on Twitter about Drake's so-called fake tendencies in rap, before he checked himself into rehab for depression and suicidal tendencies. While many think that the Cudi references in the recent Drake track were a bit tasteless due to Cudi's current situation, the references to Pusha T being a "studio drug dealer" instead of the heavy amount of drug trafficking that King Push discusses in his music is one of the first real moments Drake addressed P. Drake has had a history of beefing with certain artists, most notably Meek Mill, Common, Tory Lanez and Joe Budden. While Drake successfully sonned Meek Mill, the other artists appeared to have the upper hand but were unable to really beat Drake's limelight and allure. I mean come on, Common called him Canada Dry and Joe Budden used the José Bautista getting punched in the face photo as the art for the a diss track. Now while the internet is quick to discuss how Drake dissed Pusha T in a few loose lines in the song, I feel like I should remind the masses about Exodus 23:1 and H.G.T.V..

Be that as it may, I recently got into a conversation with a friend of mine on whether or not there is simply too much Drake. This ended up being a point of discussion on Hot 97, which more or less confirms the mutual feeling about Drake. When a top artist such as Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, J. Cole, Nas and other drop new music, the internet gets lit fam. I mean Jay dropped 2 bars and a couple exhales on a Drake track and the internet lost its mind. But the reason these artists get that type of reception to their new music is the fact that they disappear. Some of them may go on tour or have other projects lined up but once their music drops, they simply disappear from the limelight only to explode back on the scene with a brand new track and/or project. The issue with Drake is that he doesn't slip back...ever. Look at his catalog. Since the acclaimed drop of So Far Gone (2009), he has had 2 retail mixtapes, 2 compilation albums with Young Money, and 4 albums - 8 projects in 7 years. This does not include his TV spots and featurings with the likes of Beyoncé, RiRi and other artists which also adds more to his exposure. With that being said, when a new track drops, do you get that same feeling of excitement you would for a track that any of the top artists would drop? The answer is no. In fact, I feel like collectively, most people would just expect it or even say here's another Drake track on the same familiar production. Now he's going to kill it. Drake is one of the only mainstay hip hop artists who consistently has radio friendly music. Don't expect to hear a Mac Miller or Action Bronson track on the radio. I know for a fact that if Kendrick did a feature on a song, I will have about a dozen friends DM me for either a link or asking me if I've heard it yet. When a new Drake track drops, it's just there. We speak about it, we will all listen to it, and then agree that its above par and dope to listen to but it won't resonate with us one bit. Now I'm just a person and these are my opinions. I'm not degrading or attacking Aubrey's hustle. Dude doesn't need to stop if the money keeps rolling in. He has placed himself in the upper echelon. But maybe the homey can Take Care and enjoy the Views, and give us More Life during his Comeback Season letting us know Nothing was the Same so we can Thank Him Later.

Eminem - Campaign Speech

This deserves it's own post.

Eminem has been pretty quiet as of late. However out of nowhere, Shady just dropped 8 minutes of politically influenced rap. He literally offers his opinion on everything from Black Lives Matter to Zimmerman to the current political race. It is literally over the most minimalist production possible. So enjoy the bars.

We Here at the Ovadose Would like to Officially Endorse Flair-Flame for the 2016 US Presidential Election

Now to those who are friends of this blog, you understand my affection for Waka Flocka. The dude is quite underrated. First of all, he can rap. But he chooses not to because he rather make party anthems to get wild to. However, the homey can spit. Yet, the thing I enjoy about him the most is the homey is true. SO straightforward and level minded that I can run with a dude that advocates for the well-being of animals and other social endeavours. To know you have a following and you use it to do good, I respect that.

A few years back, Waka started to get deep into the political game. He first signed up to be an official candidate for the 2016 election last year...

But then he realized quickly that the majority of the power comes from the congress. So then he became a candidate to run for Speaker of the House...

Now due to legislation that prevents him from running (too young), he's found the most epic of running mates to run for the presidential race...16 time heavyweight champion of the world Ric Flair!!! We would like to formally endorse these two individuals for the upcoming presidential election. BRICKSQUAD and the 4 Horseman. North Korea, Russia, the nWo...nothing can stop em now.

Solange Potentially Dropped the Album of the Year...

First of all, congratulations to the Knowles sisters for being the first sisters to ever have Number 1 albums. Seriously. The first sisters to have solo number 1 albums. Much respect. But this album is a lyrical and spiritual RKO. It came out of nowhere. Let me explain why this album is simply stunning.

The second you press play, you're immediately encompassed by an album that shows you the growth of a young black woman. The intricacies associated with the pain and joy of a young black woman in modern day America are exemplified in this project over fantastic melodies that immediately give you the sense of a D'Angelo Voodoo vibe. But it's the content in the music that outweighs the entire project. The discussions of the black female struggle in 2016 discussing modern day Civil Rights movements alongside the well documented and heavily ignored plight of black Americans are given a new light in Solange's narrative. She does especially well since her voice is ameliorated by the jazz vibe throughout the entire album, while touching base with her personal plights as well as those with her family. It is an absolutely incredible project that somehow encompasses all of the tension, pain, pride, sorrow and temporary solace alongside the beautiful production of the legendary Raphael Saadiq. The melodies are almost meditative where you end up finding yourself lost in the words of a woman who rightly found her place in the world, cementing her spot at the table at the Knowles family reunion. Do not sleep on this album. It's an experience that Solange has shared with us that I am extremely thankful for. Remember to support your favorite artists...and this is one project you should support.

So I'm going to blare out this garbage with some BARS. Enjoy the drops y'all.

Congratulations Murs for Breaking the Freestyle Rap Marathon World Record

Murs just rapped for 24 hours straight. Did you understand that? Twenty. Four. Hours. Straight. Breaking the old record held by Chiddy of Chiddy Bang, Murs mixed up freestyling alongside performances of classics by 2Pac, Dr. Dre., A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang and others. He started yesterday and his voice just kept getting hoarser and hoarser. I kept checking in on the video and had it running in the background for quite some time throughout the day. The entire way, he was able to maintain the energy and vibe which I thought was extraordinary. Produced by Boost Mobile and Twitch.Tv, he was able to do it. You can cycle through his adventure in the video above.

Seasons Change, Mad Things Rearrange

Leaves are changing color, the ubiquitous Christmas paraphernalia in all store fronts...Winter is Coming. So warm yourself up with these filthy visuals. Cudi, Pusha, Danny Brown, Weeknd, and more.

When you get to the Pusha Video, I suggest you cycle through that video a few times. The song itself makes hints at it being a diss track towards a certain T.O. rapper and his affinity for ghostwriting. But I guess only King Push knows.

BET Hip Hop Awards Were Last Night...And I Was EXTREMELY Disappointed

The BET Hip Hop awards have been a perennial event where BET puts lyricists on point. A good focus of their awards is to award individuals who have an unreal lyrical stamina...Sway would call them Hyenas. Historically, the limelight is put on the BET Cyphers which have become legendary from when Joe Budden murdered the cypher with a rookie by the name Nicki Minaj, to Black Hippy and Shady dropping some of those most memorable lines in rap history. The squad cyphers for G.O.O.D. music, A$AP Mob and others have just reiterated the fact that Hip Hop ain't dead. So you can imagine that last night would be no different...right?

Now I'm not hating or being salty about the new age of swag rap (i.e. mumble rap) with the focus being on guys like Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage and others, but when you step to a cypher mic I best hope you're rapping off the top of the dome. If you plan on using written raps, make sure they are actually legit. The art of freestyling is integral to hip hop, regardless of the style of rap you choose to love. One of the highlights for me was when Lil Wayne and Chocolate Droppa (aka Kevin Hart) actually freestyled. If you're on the same award ceremony doing BET cyphers against a 5 ft nothing comedian then PLEASE show up and do something. I was actually upset with the State Property cypher. Excited to see all those cats in the same room killing the mic but they were just reciting the same bars from their Game of Thrones track on Neef's most recent project.

Now there were some serious highlights. Token murdered his bars. Probably the best of the night. The State Property cypher was still enjoyable but it left a bad taste in my mouth. The live cyphers were heat. Dead Prez and Locksmith...goddamn. The spoken word performances by Big K.R.I.T. and Lecrae were phenomena, filled with the upmost emotion and definitely the highlights of the night. You can tell there was a political statement being made the entire night. Links to the cyphers and performances that I believe are worth your time are down below. (I would have put them on the page itself but the video player for BET could possibly be the worst video player on the internet).

Thesis Submitted. Time. To. RAGE!

Man it feels good to be alive! So enjoy the visuals y'all! I still need to work on publications and organize a defense date but frankly I'm going to kick it for a minute.

Wayback Playback - D4L - Laffy Taffy/Shawty Lo - Dey Know

Earlier this morning, Shawty Lo passed away after a hit and run. My condolences goes out to his family in this troubled time. While I am a massive fan of rap and lyricism, there are a few artists out there that I bump just cause the music is too good. Shawty Lo has had that effect and I have been bumping these two tracks all day.

Laffy Taffy is self explanatory during the entire snap and pop movement in hip hop. The importance of the Dey Know track is the fact that it was a legit beef track against Yung LA and more importantly T.I.. Shawty Lo and T.I,'s beef about being the King of the South was a solid beef and Shawty Lo def took a real G move by not only biting the Yung LA "Ain't I" track but collaborating with Ludacris on the remix who was also beefing with T.I. at that point. RIP Shawty Lo.

Wayback Playback - Everything To Do With The Game and 50 Cent

In honor of them squashing whatever beef they had at Ace of Diamonds, I guess there's no need for beefing when women are stripping. They dabbed and Jayceon honored Curtis later in the night. Now chances are this means absolutely nothing. Hoping their beef gets absolutely squashed and that they start making that magic again has got me reminiscing on what could've been if those shots at the radio station in NYC were never shot.
